Diseases of the lung


• The lungs compose of alveoli, alveolar septi that contain the capillaries & interstitium which contain the collagen & elastic fibers.
• Alveoli lined with two types of epithelium cells : type 1 (produce the surfactant), type 2


*slide2:
- Patients after surgery may have excessive production of mucus which may lead to complete alveolar obstruction.
- Aspiration of foreign material may lead to obstruction of the air way preventing the air from reaching the alveoli & the air that is already present will be absorbed.


*slide3:
- Congestive heart failure: the blood will stay in the circulation causing increase in the hydrostatic pressure in the plural capillary beds causing exit of the fluid from the capillaries into the plural cavity then it will accumulates (plural effusion) and the accumulate is edematous transudate.
- Basal atelectasis: collapse of the alveoli that are present at the base of the lung.
- Bedridden: people who sleep too much
- Ascites: accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity.

-some restrictive lung diseases cause fibrosis of the lung which prevent expansion of the lung causing collapse to it.

*slide6:
- Acute lung injury: inflammatory process in the lung causes edema (exudate) that in chest radiograph shows multiple &bilateral opacity (abnormal infiltrate)
- Left-sided heart failure: the blood will accumulate in the pulmonary veins increasing the hydrostatic pressure in the pulmonary capillaries causing pulmonary edema.
